A Date with Madam Kwan

Well, it wasn’t really a date but more so lunch at the Pavilion Mall in Kuala Lumpur. A short hop and a skip away from Apple Hotel in Jalan Alor. If your’e wondering who Madam Kwan is? Well, she is an icon. One of not many left in Kuala Lumpur. Madam Kwan has been in business for over 25 years. Her food is delicious and tasty making many people happy even CEO of Apple Hotel Jerry Ho. Mr Ho started going to Madam Kwan back 20 years ago saving his RM7 out of a modest pay to eat her delicious food.

Madam Kwan

To this day, the amazing thing is, she still comes in the morning to cook the food. Peel the onions, check the gravy. Thou the company has taken off with locations in Bangsar, Mid Valley, Empire Shopping centre. Madam Kwan can only be found at the Pavilion Mall in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur these days. This is her home. She gets in early in the morning to start food prep, and leaves late. A tradition forged from years of hard work and discipline. Today the food has evolved and with it Madam Kwan provides us with amazing delights.

The price range is between the RM10 to RM30. We walked in with a group of ten however it was only myself and Mr Ho present at first. Mr Ho greeted Madam Kwan like a old friend and both spend a long time talking. We were taken to a curtained area where we sat and chatted till the other guests arrived. Madam Kwan was easily approachable and even witty. Talking about her past and how the company is currently run by her and now with a lot of help from her son.

Food started arriving after awhile, if there is one complaint I have and it is a minor one, it is that the food all comes out at once. Coming from a culture of entrées, mains and deserts (not that we had desert), it all came out like a bursting dam. From here we all dug in, the satay sticks going in seconds followed on by the Nasi Bojari, Big Chicken Drumsticks, massive Sambal Prawns. This was truly a feast. The salmon arrived as well making it all the more worth while. All Up, amazing food. Come early for the Nasi Lemak as apparently it goes fast.

Overall the bill as expected is you get what you pay for and we payed a lot. The meal was well worth the price. Apart from all the shopping that Kuala Lumpur has to provide, this is a  great place to shop and the choice of food places as with most Malaysian Malls is limitless. I throughly enjoyed my date with Madam Kwan, the variety in food is overwhelming. We look always to make our eating experience all that much more enjoyable and this is the reason why. Take a stroll from Apple Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and walk down the main stretch of Bukit Bintang to Pavilion. Plenty of fun and shopping for all.
