Saturday in Malaysia is dinner night. Actually every night in Malaysia is dinner night. Unlike at home where you may go out for dinner once mid week and once on the weekend, well here it’s every night. People will travel great distances for food here and we drove 15 minutes from Kuala Lumpur to get to this wonderful place.

My friends have been constantly talking about this famous dish called Bak Kut Teh for some time however till Saturday, I had not had the pleasure of devouring it. So lets start with what is Bak Kut Teh. Well the good old Wiki describes it as a Chinese soup popular in Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China and here in heartland Malaysia. The reach of this dish goes to the Thai border, Indonesia and it is even found in the Melbourne Community in Australia. You may also find this in the local Chinatown in Sydney.

The Dish is said to be invented by the “Klang” in the 1900s, so the dish is not that old as many others however it has climbed the Social Ladders with a speed making it famous. Normally I would prance around the History of this great meal however you can find all that in the Wikipedia. It’s a story about three brothers, almost like romance of the three kingdoms except for without the war or the romance for that matter.

Bak Kut Teh in Kuala Lumpur

Bak Kut Teh can be eaten with rice or noodles however we in this case eat with rice. The meal itself is dead simple. We had a Cantonese version which which means the soup is a lot stronger than other varieties. The one we had was a bit thicker as well as is popular in the Klang Valley area. It contained dried dates, chillis, also sometimes dried squid but not in this case.Pork is the base for this meal and boiled down slowly throughout the day.  The side condiments included fried onions, not like the normal way but dried fried onions which for some reason are red. Now you add this to your rice add in the soup which I will get to in a second and bang, the taste is unreal. You may get some vegetables as well to complete the meal.

I love the way the meat falls off the bone, the taste is exquisite. The pot is put right in front of you over a slow burning fire. The beauty of it all is the sauce never finishes. They will constantly keep topping up the soup no matter how much you drink. The optimum time for eating this wonderful dish is around late at night, midnight onwards. Apparently this is a amazing hangover cure. Since we were full, we have mentioned the terminator before, he once again managed to destroy the left overs. The man demolished the rice as if it’s going out of fashion.

You can take the monorail than bus however taking the bus in Kuala Lumpur is a chore. A taxi ride would cost around RM20 thou it should be ten but we know how the taxis are here. Make the journey and try this wonderful meal as I have, it’s worth the journey.
