On Saturday the 26th of March at 8.30 pm the lights all around the world would switch off for Earth Hour. Earth Hour for those of us unaware is an event organized by the WWF, no not the world wrestling federation but the World Wide Fund for Nature. This event is always held on the last Saturday of March globally. The idea is to ask households and business alike to turn off non-essential lights or electrical appliances for duration of 60 minutes or one hour to raise global awareness towards the need for climate change.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when around 2 million Sydney-siders took part in this event. Since than the event has stretched across the world and is now global. Youtube has promoted this event and in India, the event has taken a major hold. Othr countries to follow are the Phillipines in South East Asia.  It truly is a remarkable event as in the USA, polls showed that 90 million American’s took part in the event.

We, on Saturday were treated in Kuala Lumpur to the wonder Petronas Towers going dark for the duration of this event. at 8.30 Pm the Tower shut off the lights. The lights went off and only the ones necessary were kept going.

It was a beautiful thing to watch and we are very glad that Malaysia is behind such an event. As many are aware Apple Hotel in Kuala Lumpur stands behind Earth Hour. Apple Hotel has always maintained a green policy from the disposable towels to the the lights used in the rooms.

Many other buildings took part in this event and around Kuala Lumpur you could see the lights going off one by one. So this year around 4000 cities took part in Earth Hour. Notable Buildings that took part including Petronas Towers were the Big Ben in London, Empire State Building in New York, Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Event is sponsored by Coca-Cola and telecommunication giants Nokia.

Apple Hotel is proud to be part of Earth Hour and looks forward to even greater expectations next year on the last day of March. Below is a Youtube Video of Earth Hour here in Kuala Lumpur. Please watch as the lights of Petronas Towers go off for the magic of Earth Hour.
