How Much do you love tea ?

One of the great aspects of Kuala Lumpur as I have often mentioned is the the variety of food, drinks and culture from the different ethnic groups.

Now does a tea with 24 herbs sound like a bit of a treat to you? Well it depends on your adventurous nature. We all travel to see the world so hence we must have some sort of  adventure bug in us. So far my path to danger has included eating crickets in Thailand, crashing a motorbike in Thailand as well ( It has nothing to do with food but being silly) eating frogs and now I can say I have tried the very famous “Ya Sei Mei ” maybe even infamous.

Ya Sei Mei..if you Dare

So what is “Ya Sei Mei” ? It is a very bitter tea served to cool the body. Also known as 24 flavor tea.  Now I havent been feeling the best so my friend suggested this tea to balance my body. We took the walk from Apple Hotel in Jalan Alor to the streets near Times Square. We the the stall or stand close by with an ageing couple looking after it. The price of the tea ranged from RM1.50 to RM4.50 depending on the strength (so i am told).  My friend ordered for me however I really wanted to order it myself and have fun with hand motions as I don’t speak Malay or Mandarin.

Now the trick with the tea is to do it in one go. You will either hate it or love it. I made the rookie mistake of trying a little bit at a time. This will just prolong the agony. My friends downed it as i stood sipping, the fact that they didn’t tell me to down it showed the love. The taste is like I said, bitter and I mean very very bitter in every sense of the world. Wait, there is good news, after you take the “crazy tea ” you get a reprieve of a small dose of sweet tea to balance it out. By little i mean a mouthful.

As we walked back to our Hotel in Jalan Alor I was starting to already feel the effects, I am still not 100% sure what is in this tea but jeepers, It has made me feel good. Now the key question is, Would I do it again? I think to be fair, If  I met some friend of mine who hasn’t tried it, I would more than be happy to introduce them to the pain I went through drinking this tea.

The Couple Selling the Tea

If your staying at the Apple Hotel in Jalan Alor, The tea stall is around a 10 minute walk away, head towards time square near Padu or a cab ride should be RM5.
