Do Most Of Us Know the Meaning of Thanksgiving?
Every November, most Americans look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving Day, but do most of us understand the meaning of Thanksgiving, and it’s original intent? Is there more to it than a big dinner, the Macy’s day parade and football?
The original intent of Thanksgiving was to express one’s gratitude to God for blessings experienced the previous year as shown by the Pilgrims back in 1621 in which they had a feast along with the Wampanoag Indians in order to thank God for having survived the first difficult year in the Plymouth colonies. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln finally established Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday, and encouraged the American public to pray for those in need and for the good of the country on that day.
We still maintain some of the original meaning of Thanksgiving today as many people volunteer at various charitable organizations in order to serve Thanksgiving dinner to those in need. Thanksgiving also is a big travel day when as many as 42.4 million people travel at least 50 miles to share Thanksgiving with family.
It is easy to see in today’s world, however, how the meaning of Thanksgiving has made more of a shift to the secular side of things, especially with more retailers opening their doors on November 24th instead of waiting for Black Friday to offer discounts and major sales.
Having a special day each year in order to give thanks is important in order to encourage us to take the time to reflect on the things in our life that are good, however large or small. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying Thanksgiving day by having a good dinner or watching a game of football, but let’s take a little time to reflect on all the blessings we’ve experienced the previous year, and express our thanks the best way we know how.
